Owner Daniel Mercer started Smoke Damage Restoration after spending years working on property cleanup projects in central Illinois. Early in that work, he noticed a pattern: smoke losses were often underestimated because the worst-looking room received all the attention. He saw properties where the visible soot had been wiped away but odor remained in cabinets, unfinished wood, fabrics, closets, and adjoining rooms. He wanted to build a service that treated smoke as a whole-property contamination problem rather than simply a dirty-surface problem.
Daniel grew up in the Decatur area and has spent most of his working life around Macon County. He knows the mix of housing found here, from older homes in established Decatur neighborhoods to newer properties near Forsyth and rural houses outside the larger towns. That local background shaped the company's practical approach: inspect carefully, explain what is actually affected, clean what can reasonably be restored, and be straightforward when a material may need sealing or replacement.
Today, Daniel works alongside Alicia Bennett and Marcus Reed. The three-person core team shares the same view of restoration: the customer should understand why each step is being taken. They focus on detailed cleaning, odor-source identification, sensible material decisions, and keeping projects organized from the first assessment through the point where final repairs can move forward.
